When I saw "my" room for the Rocca Brivio show I noticed this corner, between a window and an unusable door.
This would have been an empty corner but soon this "problem" has become an happy reason to work to a project I had in my mind for a while: a gown.

I wanted to make a long dress with flared skirt and top, I had clearly in mind the shape, not so clear was the subject of the applique. One day I was thinking of a phoenix, a day after a carp and the day after again a dragon. Then start again from the phoenix and so on.
In any case, the colors would have been red/yellow, while the background was expected to be black.

With my doubts in mind I went to take the fabric for the dress. I entered the shop and went to the silk shelf, to see if there were black.
There was, but just above the black roll there was a roll of this beautiful shantung silk, iridescent, of a color between red / burgundy and blue.
It was love at first sight and this fabric convinced me on the subject: the phoenix.

The top is cut straight grain, with an heart-shaped neckline.
The skirt is cut on the bias, long to the feet, with tulle petticoat to keep it a little open.

The applique is made out of silk but the light yellow pieces that are of hand dyed cotton. The silk would reveal too much dark color from the background.

This dress was a very success and I'm glad of that! :)

here I'm to show you my room at Rocca Brivio Quilt Show.
I had 1 gown and 8 quilts on show. I wanted to give a consistent look and feel to my room so I didn't show my past quilts but almost all new quilts.
I've used this event to create all that quilts that were ready on the paper but that were waiting for the "right time" to be translated from ideas on paper to art on fabric.

And so this is my room... this is a sneak peak from the next room. Here you can see my "Phoenix" gown and the "Eva" quilt.

Entering through this door you have on the right a wall with two big windows and a piece of wall between them. Here I've hung my "Orka Vortex" quilt (that won the 2nd place in a national quilt show last year)

On the next wall I've hung my diptych "Adamo" (the white one) and "Eva" (the black one), a statement about masculine and feminine being.
In the corner there is my gown "Phoenix", made out of silk.

Looking at the next door you can see the bigger wall, where I've hung my triptych "My true colors", a serie about colours of my emotions.
From the left: "Persephone", "Selene" and "Euphrosyne"

And at the ent my last wall, with a wonderful marble fireplace over which I hung two quilts about human cruelty over animals.
On the left "Ceci ne sera pas une papillon" (trans: this will never be a butterfly) that won the "emotional impact" award in the international quilt show in Verona.
On the right the new "Per un piatto di linguine" (trans: for a dish of linguini) about date mussel.

In these photos you see all rooms empty because I've made them before opening.
After the opening the situation was very different :)))

The three white cubes where useful to sit down, the table on the center of the room was there to hold my business cards and an info sheet I've made to offer to visitors a way to see and understand my quilts also when I wasn't in the room to explain.

I've to admit that this experience was tiring but wonderful. I've met lot of peoples, and who know may be some meeting will turn in job or business relations.

My last two months were very busy but hey, I'd do all this again tomorrow :)

Saturday and Sunday Rocca Brivio has hosted the 4th annual quilt show held by the "Donne Patchwork" guild.

Walking toward the Rocca you're welcomed from a 50 square meters quilt named "the rag". It was made from the quilters of the guild and it hung from the balcony over the great door, framing it.

Walking under the rag the effect is great!

Inside the great iron gate there is the inside court ...

The path to the show is easy to find, simply follow the Dear Jane

Behind the Dear Jave you can walk inside the Rocca, where 5 rooms werededicated to the show.

First room: Group show of the quilts made by the guild quilters. There was also a game for visitors. We draw the guild's logo on a black cloth and invited every visitor to sew a small piece of fabric in the design.
It will be quilted and will be the second quilt of a diptych started on march.

Second Room: Again guild's quilts and the lottery prizes, all handmade. From pillows to artquilts, from pouches to embroidered.

Third Room: Solo show of "Le Trame Biellesi". traditional quilts (plus a bag) made out of wool cloth.

Fifth Room: Solo show of Lisa Bonomi, an italian quilter that likes to reproduce art-nuveau paintings with every kind of repurposed fabrics, from wearables to furniture fabrics.

Eh? What? I forgot the fourth room do you say? NOOOOOOPE ^_^
The Fourth Room was MY room, for me and my contemporary quilts!
MY FIRST SOLO SHOW.
Of course, only a smll one, but it is always a solo show. ^_^

Non potete mancare perchè.... no dico avete visto la locandina? ESPONGO IO!!!! AHAH

Nel momento in cui creo un quilt per uno show sono un'artista.
Nel momento in cui vado a vedere uno show sono una spettatrice.
Che io fossi nei panni dell'artista o della spettatrice c'è una cosa della quale ho sentito molto la mancanza in ogni singolo show cui ho partecipato o che ho visitato qui in Italia:  una descrizione tecnica e artistica che accompagni ogni pezzo in mostra.

Per chi non fosse dell'ambiente lasciatemi spiegare.
La descrizione tecnica di un'opera consiste nella spiegazione dei materiali e delle tecniche utilizzate per realizzare un dato lavoro. Ad esempio per il mio quilt di VeronaTessile io avevo scritto "seta, lana, bozzoli di baco, cucito a macchina, trapuntato a macchina, applique tridimensionale, acrilico".
La descrizione tecnica viene sempre chiesta nei bandi di concorso, sia stranieri che italiani.

La descrizione artistica è invece una spiegazione che l'autore da della propria opera. Spiega perchè ha fatto cio che ha fatto, magari cosa voleva dire, che ispirazione ha avuto, e sopratutto come ha interpretato il tema del concorso o dello show.
La descrizione artistica l'ho sempre vista chiedere nei concorsi stranieri (chi la vuole di mezza pagina, chi di massimo 25 parole, ma l'ho sempre vista) mentre non l'ho mai incontrata nei bandi italiani.

Negli show cui ho partecipato e/o assistito non ho mai visto affiancare ai lavori una spiegazione artistica, e raramente quella tecnica.
E trovo che questo sia un peccato perchè, a mio avviso, queste due cose sono fondamentali perchè ogni lavoro venga capito ma sopratutto apprezzato.

Faccio alcuni esempi pratici.
Ieri a Verona mi è stato chiesto di cosa fossero fatti i bozzoli sul mio quilt. "Seta" ho risposto.
Ma questa risposta non è stata sufficiente, perchè subito mi è stato ribattuto "si ho capito ma come hai fatto a farli?"
Così ho compreso il malinteso e ho risposto "oh ma non li ho fatti io, li ha fatti il baco"
Non posso descrivere l'espressione di stupore di questa persona quando ha realizzato che erano proprio bozzoli veri e non riproduzioni.
Se ci fosse stata una descrizione tecnica riportante tra i materiali "bozzoli veri" il dubbio non ci sarebbe stato.

Ancora, ho visto quilt bellissimi e tecnicamente meravigliosi, con stoffe tinte a mano, dettagli aggiunti con vari tipi di vernici o materiali, venir sottovalutati dai passanti perchè ignari del gran lavoro che ci fosse dietro quei pezzi apparentemente semplici e spogli.

Per quanto riguarda la descrizione artistica a volte è fondamentale per capire un lavoro che altrimenti sembra non dire nulla.
E' vero che una descrizione artistica potrebbe togliere al visitatore il piacere di dare una propria interpretazione, ma un visitatore con questo intento potrebbe semplicemente non leggere tale descrizione o farlo solo dopo aver deciso la propria interpretazione.
Altri potrebbero invece aver pronta una chiave di lettura.

Ad esempio a Verona ho visto un quilt del concorso che mi ha lasciata spiazzata, non son ancora riuscita a trovarvi un senso. Io son certa che chi l'ha fatto ha voluto esprimere qualcosa, ma cosa? Perchè ha scelto proprio quei colori? Quelle linee e forme? Io avrei voluto saperlo, invece non avendo una chiave di lettura mi rimane solo la sensazione di aver visto un quilt "fatto a caso"

Ecco perchè mi piacerebbe moltissimo che anche negli show italiani prendesse piede l'abitudine di affiancare ai lavori, oltre al nome dell'artista ed al titolo, anche due righe di spiegazione tecnica e artistica.

Perchè così chiunque potrebbe saperne di più e non vi sarebbe più il rischio di sottovalutare quilt all'apparenza semplici o di reputare "fatti a caso" quilt che invece hanno alle spalle una fase di lunga ricerca preliminare e un significativo perchè.

Sadly some pictures are blurred, one of the two room was a little less bright than the other. Moreover I hadn't my usual camera :( I'll see if my husband has got better pictures, if so I'll replace the blurred ones.
