Si torna al lavoro

by orkaloca agosto 17 creazioni

go, sew, win

by orkaloca luglio 11 show * creazioni

In June I worked on a quilt for the competition of Rossano, the theme was "Tell me your dream." At the end of June I sent the photos and my entry form, and my work was accepted to the show.
The show was held this week, and the prize  rank is now public, so now I can tell you all:)

The work I submitted for the show is called ORKA VORTEX, and won the second prize in the category Contemporary!

My dreams are always populated by killer whales, the others are usually nightmares.
Orcas are part of me, and in dreams we express our essence so my quilt is literally the essence of me.

There are blue and purple, exactly nine shades of blue, from dark to light, and 9 shades of purple, from dark to light, for a total of 18 hand-dyed fabrics!
And blue and purple are my favorite colors. And they whirl, as in the best dreams, thanks to the Spiral Bargello technique.
Of course there are killer whales, hand painted with 3D dorsal fins. Jumping, playing and running orcas.

Then there is the quilting motif... peacock feathers that represent my character (angry, beautiful, proud...), and flowers because I'am also a romantic girl :p Stipples and feather complete te piece.

This quilt has left me terribly happy and satisfied, but you can imagine how happy I was when I discovered I won a prize!

A few days ago I received a phone call ... was the Rossano organizator, and she asked me to go for the award cerimony, but I had a lot of work to do, and between my home and Rossano there is "only" the whole Italy.
But I will see my quilt shown in other shows... in fact it will be displayed in Tolmezzo, in September, and then in Cervia at the national quilting weekend in November.
And guess what, I am now registered for the Cervia week-end ahah.

I'm sooooo happy!

bonbonniere

by orkaloca luglio 11 creazioni

Not long ago I received a flattering demand: a companion since high school, which I've re-found via FB, asked me to pack 40 bonbonniere to celebrate her daughter birth.
And so I began to work and after lot of sewing, cutting, painting, finally I've completed the mission.

Here they are my 40 little bonbonniere boxes all in their big box. The caskets are made of cotton damask, in a beautiful lilac, and I have painted over the baby initial :)

A better photo of the boxes and the confetti pack with tulle and a fabric flower to keep them closed.

Whith the confetti there is the name tag, hand-stamped and hand written in the old-way: pen and ink.

I love them, now I hope also my friend will like them.

New baby quilt with stars and hearts

by orkaloca giugno 20 creazioni

After selling the baby quilt with dogs, I hadn't more baby quilts, so I made a new one. I've to admit that I have never loved pink, but now I'm using it very often to sew my baby quilts.
But pink is balanced by my beloved purple hearts and lilac and yellow and orange stars.
I like the result! eheh

Pop-Art quilt

by orkaloca giugno 1 creazioni

Thi month the theme of the Fast Friday Fabric Challenge was: Fungi + complementary or split complementary colours + stylized or abstract.

My entry is called "If Andy had been a mycologist".
Yes, the Andy of the title is Warhol :p
I'd like to do a piece in Andy's style since I started quilting, and this challenge seems to be perfect.
When I've read about the split complementary colours I've had hard time choosing which colours use, then I've decided to use them all, and the better way was to do a "pop-art" quilt :) so here's my entry for the challenge:

Every block is made with 3 split complementary colours. I've used the main colour as background of the block, then I've used the two complementay colours for the mushroom.
The mushroom is an earth-star Astraeus hygrometricus , a kind of fungi that fascinate me since I was child :)

With this little quilt (14"x14") I went out of my comfort zone choosing to do raw edges applique.
I hate raw edges, but in this case I've thought that this technique would be perfect to give the aspect of the scales on the star petals, and I've to admit that I'm quite happy with the result.
The "petal" zone is made by 2 layers. The bottom layer is fused on the background, the top layer is only sewn down without fusing. I've then sew the scales shapes and I've cut away the unwanted fabric between the scales to let show the bottom layer.

Here is a close-up of one block (click to enlarge)

I really had fun sewing this quilt :)

Per la culla o carrozzina

by orkaloca maggio 21 creazioni

Piace?
